• What it is:A mercury sphygmomanometer consists of an inflatable cuff, a bulb to inflate the cuff, a valve to release pressure, a mercury column to indicate pressure, and a stethoscope to listen for blood flow sounds. 
• How it works:The cuff is wrapped around the arm, inflated, and then slowly deflated. The mercury column rises as the cuff pressure increases and falls as the pressure is released. A stethoscope is used to listen for the sounds of blood flow (Korotkoff sounds) as the pressure in the cuff decreases, and the readings are taken where the sounds first appear (systolic pressure) and where they disappear (diastolic pressure). 
• Uses:
  • Accurate blood pressure measurement: Mercurial devices are known for their accuracy and are often used in clinical trials and for evaluating high-risk patients. 
  • Reference standard: They are considered a reference standard for other blood pressure measuring devices. 
  • Manual measurement: They are used for manual blood pressure measurement, which can be useful in situations where electronic devices are not available or reliable. 
• Advantages:

  • No calibration needed: The mercury column does not require calibration. 
• Disadvantages:
